Belmont Park May Soon Host Tribal Casino Gambling

Belmont Park, the historic New York race track, may be the target location for a proposed tribal casino.

As the Shinnecock Tribe awaits word on its application for federal recognition, speculation has already begun on which locations the Indian tribe may choose to establish casinos. Members of the tribe confirmed that historic Belmont Park may be the spot they desire.

Shinnecock representatives have been seeking the formal federal acceptance of the tribe since 1978. But last week, an agreement was reached between the tribe and the US Department of the Interior to speed up the review process, and a decision is expected by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, foward-looking tribal members are anxious to enjoy their federally guaranteed casino and gaming privileges, and many say Belmont, in Nassau County, would be the ideal location. The track, home to this week's Triple Crown finale, is located just ouside New York City and would be an easy trip for City residents.

"The people in the surrounding communities have indicated support," said Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi of the rumored casino. "Belmont is the ideal location both for the operators of a casino, the residents and the local governments."

An earlier proposal to bring a Shinnecock casino to their ancestral area on Long Island met with resistance from Southampton residents, worried about increased traffic in their exclusive neighborhoods.

The tribe says it cares to locate in an area where the casino would be welcome. "We fully intend to remain good neighbors as we pursue opportunities to provide jobs for our people," said Shinnecock trustee Gordell Wright.
