Casino Gambling Referendum To Appear on California Ballot
When Governor Schwarzenegger from California completed his compact with several Indian tribes, the opposition was ready to challenge the decision.
Governor Schwarzenegger and the California state Legislature thought they had a compact with four Indian Tribe casinos, but a referendum will seek voters input on the deal.
On Tuesday, a Sacramento Supreme Court Judge made a ruling that voters should get a chance to voice their opinion on the compact through a referendum that will be on the ballot during the February 5th presidential primary election.
The tribes that are involved in the compact, which would bring up to 17,000 additional slot machines to California casinos, are the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, and the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians.
Horsetrack owners, a labor union, and two other Indian tribes are the opposition to the compact.
Tuesday's ruling will most likely be challenged by Agua Caliente.
