Greektown Casino Gambling On Expansion
Greektown Casino in Detroit has been lagging behind the area's two other casinos in revenue and growth, but a recent refurbishment and expansion may soon make the venue more competitive.
Construction crews are nearly finished their work, allowing the reopening of surrounding roads that have been closed for almost a year while the building took place, preventing easy access to the casino.
Six hundred more slot machines have been installed, and there is a new high roller slot area. The gaming floor has been expanded by thirty-three percent. A 400-room hotel will open in February.
Greektown has had trouble keeping up with the MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity, the two ritzier Detroit casinos. Greektown, owned by the Sault St. Marie Chippewa tribe, has been in and out of bankruptcy protection, and had to lay off eighty-nine workers in June as part of a cost-cutting program.
The casino is expected to lose more than $15 million this year, most of which is a result of the bankruptcy and its costs.
