Houston Cops Pull Daring Raid on Video Gambling Parlor
Gamblers at the Star video gaming lounge in Houston were suprised Thursday night when police raided the illegal joint and declared themselves the big winners, confiscating over $40,000 in cash and over 100 machines.
Houston police estimate there are as many as 500 illegal operations running gaming machines in the city.
Patrons were detained and interrogated, but no charges were filed. If caught playing, gamblers can be ticketed and fined up to $300.
Locations like the Star draw clientele with free food and non-alcoholic drinks, and often offer weekly prizes and payouts.
Police spokesmen pointed out the danger of playing unregulated machines, saying 99.9% of players at illegal stores lose money.
The seized money was split 30-70 between the District Attorney's Office and the Houston Police Department.
Police also pointed out the danger of playing at illegal locations known for being cash businesses, as robberies are common. Authorities asserted robbers could come in, take all the money and leave innocent people penniless. No intentional irony was detected.
So police collect a big cash windfall, harrass the citizenry, and get names in the paper. Just another wonderful day serving and protecting.
