Indian Casino Unions Growing Stronger Around The Country
Labor unions have played a major part in the development of the United States. Employers used to just have their way with their workers. Unions came along and protected workers against business owners that were treating them unfairly.
Indian Casino gaming is becoming more prevalent with every passing day. Casinos are being built all around the country, not just in Las Vegas. Expanded gambling laws are taking effect in states that never allowed gambling, meaning the industry is growing to record numbers.
Never has workers unions been very strong in these Indian casinos. Last month, however, may have seen the beginning of a trend in the union direction. The United Auto Workers just claimed a huge victory in Connecticut against a major casino. That victory, after six months of battling, is beginning to open doors to other unions becoming strong around the country.
UNITE HERE has played a major role in campaigning in California for a stronger hand in organizing. They want to be able to organize by having workers sign a union card, and not having to have an election.
The group is currently supporting several Bills in the next election that would block new gambling agreements for a group of tribes that have not allowed stronger labor organization rules.
The California battle is one of many that are expected over the next few years around the country. Casino gambling is becoming a big industry in the United States, and with expansion comes change. The beginning of that change is already happening and it is good change for workers who previously had a limited voice.
