Iowa Problem Gambling Treatment Shows Outstanding Results

Iowa has done a superb job in treating people suffering from problem gambling, according to a university survey.

A study of problem gambling and its treatment in Iowa found the state's program has been highly successful in helping players who asked for assistance in fighting compulsive gambling. Not only have the people who entered the program achieved excellent results in avoiding future gambling troubles, but the number of complaints has dropped as well.

The study, by the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Social and Behavioral Research in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Public Health, showed that six months after receiving treatment, 95 percent said they had reduced or eliminated problem gambling behavior.

Further, while 41 percent said they were late on their personal bills entering treatment, only 21 percent still found themselves behind when exiting the program.

The numbers came from a survey of the 940 people that applied for help from the Iowa Gambling Treatment Program in 2008. But more good news came for counselors who disclosed that the number of Iowans reporting themselves in problem gambling trouble dropped from 2008 to 2007.

Treatment can be given in either group settings or as individual counseling, and is offered at 55 locations in the state.
