Macau Landmark Casino Hotel Lisboa Getting A Makeover

The MGM brings much of what made their MGM Grand in Las Vegas so successful.

Back when Hotel Lisboa was built in 1970, nobody knew what was going to become of Macau. At the time, there was no vision that the island city would become a hot spot for casino gambling.

Thirty seven years later the city has built itself up to such high standards, that one of its original casinos now needs a face lift to keep up with competition. Macau's SJM gaming company has announced plans to rebuild Hotel Lisboa.

The addition of MGM Grand Macau will set the new standard for casinos in the area. The MGM brings much of what made their MGM Grand in Las Vegas so successful.

In regards to Lisboa's expansion, owners felt the time was right to upgrade the facilities. "Since its opening in 1970, Hotel Lisboa has played an important role in Macau's economic development, the rebuilding project...accentuates our promise to further promote Macau's economic prosperity," said Stanley Ho, the Chief Executive Officer of the SJM.

Ho knows plenty about the economics of casinos in Macau. Before the latest expansion, which has now reached twenty eight casinos, Ho held a monopoly on casino gambling in the area.
