Massachusetts Tribe Deals with Genting for Tribal Casino
A Massachusetts tribe intent on opening a tribal casino has formed a partnership with Genting Group. The Wampanoag Tribe is seeking to build a $1 billion casino near Middleborough, Massachusetts.
Genting Group operates casinos and gambling centered in Asia but covering the world, including new Malaysian properties and the Star Cruise ship line. The company's Resort World gaming complex in Singapore is projected to open next year.
In committing to the new partnership, the Wampanoags cut ties to Sol Kerzner and Len Wolman, investors involved in the founding of Mohegan Sun tribal casino in Connecticut. The pair also developed Sun City, the famous gambling and casino area in South Africa.
Tribal leaders say plans had stalled under the previous arrangement. The tribe wants to be prepared when the state legislature examines expanded gambling, as any legalization of slots would give the tribe the right to operate a casino featuring slots.
Massachusetts lawmakers have stated repeatedly that casino gambling is on the way, but any debate and vote on the subject will take place after the new year.
