Biloxi Casino Gets Mayor's Approval
The Mississippi Gulf Coast continues to move toward creating a new casino. Mayor A. J. Holloway gave his approval to the project this week.
The Biloxi City Council had earlier ratified a zoning change to allow a casino to be built on the Biloxi Strip. The entire area is undergoing renovation, with a retro theme designed to retain the feel of Biloxi fifty years ago.
The next step is to apply to the Mississippi Gaming Commission for a license. Considering the local approval, it would be a surprise if the Gaming Commission denied the application
Condominium and hotel projects designed to sit on either side of the casino have already begun construction. Holloway mentioned this when giving his go-ahead, asserting that the zoning change would not allow a proliferation of casinos along the waterfront, as a considerable amount of development in the area is already underway.
To Mississippi, this represents yet another step in recovery from Hurricane Katrina. Virtually the entire town of Biloxi was washed away in the storm, and severe damage was done to the wide expanse of white sand beach. Even today, debris washed out to sea during the hurricane continues to wash up on the shore.
