Alcohol Sales at Casino Voted in By Navajo Lawmakers
The Navajo tribe and alcohol are a sticky situation. The sale and consumption of alcohol is not allowed on their reservation. Lawmakers, however, appear ready to make an exception for the tribe's new casino.
Money talks. No matter what the beliefs or rules are, money always finds a way to win out. That is what happen on a reservation where alcohol is prohibited. The need for money outweighed the beliefs of a tribe.
Navajo lawmakers voted in favor of allowing the sale and consumption of alcohol in the dining area at their new casino. The vote was close, going 38-36 in favor of alcohol.
The casino is slated to open in July. After much discussion on the matter, the lawmakers, by a narrow margin, decided that it would be too devastating economically to not allow for the alcohol consumption.
President Joe Shirley Jr. will now weigh in on the matter after lawmakers approved the idea. He is in favor of the idea, so there should be no problems getting his approval on Thursday's vote.
