Navajo Tribe Ready To Lease Slots To Other Tribes With Casinos
The Navajo Indian Tribe has had a rocky road on its way to operating casinos in Arizona. While they wait for tribe members to embrace casino gambling, they have decided to lease their slot machines.
Different tribes that already operate casinos in Arizona have bid on the rights to lease slots from the Navajo Tribe. Although they already have functioning casinos, many feel they can benefit from leasing the Navajo slots.
The Navajos have made the machines available because members within their tribe have been slow to come to the idea of casino gambling. It is a taboo among Navajo's the idea of casino gambling. Navajo legend condemns gambling.
The Navajo Nation, however, is moving forward with the opening of several casinos. The first will be opened by July 4th. It is going to be at a temporary location near New Mexico.
The slot leases are going to generate over $140 million over the next eighteen years, according to Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley.
