Lions Cannot Sell Out Silverdome, Maybe Casino Will
The Detroit Lions are one of the worst franchises in all of sports. They do not go to the playoffs very often, and their teams are known more for their failures than their successes.
One success they have had was building Ford Field. It allowed them to move from their longtime home, the Silverdome. The stadium was nice, but served more as a place for teams to come in and abuse the Lions.
Now, city officials are contemplating the idea of building an indoor racing facility with a casino at the Silverdome. The plan at this point seems like a long shot, but it is still being discussed by officials.
The developer who wants to bring the racing and casino gambling to the Silverdome is H. Wallace Parker, a lawyer from Bloomfield. He has proposed a $12 million offer. Pontiac officials want to negotiate the offer, but Parker said that the offer is firm. That means that it will likely not become reality.
"It's all about money. They want more. The offer is based on studies we've done on what the market will bear," said Parker. The hold up after the negotiations are complete could lie in the licensing. Only three licenses are allowed in the metro Detroit area, and they are already in use.
"You can't have a commercial casino without a statewide referendum," said city lawyer Dave Domzal.
