Singapore Eyes Safety Measures Before Starting Casino Gambling
Singapore officials say they want protective measures stricter than those of other countries in place before casino gambling comes to the city-state. With several casino resorts scheduled to open in the next year, rules to prevent social problems associated with gambling will be developed, promised the country's Minister for Community Development, Youth, and Sports.Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan told the nation's parliament that regulations still being devised on taxing gambling revenue and running exclusion programs will be ready when gaming commences at the new casinos.
Heavy penalties will be levied against any found avoiding the proper taxation of gaming income. And exclusion rules will not only include those who voluntarily opt out, but also anyone on government assistance and anyone in bankruptcy.
Families also have the right to exclude relatives, a process being examined by legislators.
"To be indicted as problem gambler through the Family Exclusion Order is a serious charge, and a socially humiliating experience," said Paulin Tay-Straughan, one of the lawmakers. "I am particularly concerned with frivolous or wilful charges initiated by individuals who are seeking means to harm or curtail civil liberties of family members."
Dr. Balakrishnan assured the legislators measures are in place to prevent fraud, money laundering, and other concerns raised when gambling is introduced.
