Star City Plans Largest Outdoor Casino Smoking Area in Sydney

"an unconscionable link in the interests of profit," is how Reverend Tim Costello describes the move by Star City.

The smoking bans that are going into effect in casinos around the world are occurring quite frequently. One casino in Sydney is moving quickly to accommodate smokers.

Star City Casino has come up with a plan to get around the new smoking laws that have gone into effect in Sydney. The casino plans to transform one of its outdoor restaurants into a gaming area that patrons can smoke in.

The restaurant, Pyrmont's, is being replaced by a gaming lounge in which smokers can enjoy playing their slot machines without having to walk away to smoke.

Currently only the high rollers have that luxury in the casino. "an unconscionable link in the interests of profit," is how Reverend Tim Costello describes the move by Star City.

The new development by the casino is an effort to keep up with other clubs that have recently created smoking areas that people can still gamble in. Opponents of the move say that the smoking laws were a way to help curb problem gambling. Now, what the laws had done will be wiped away by clubs finding ways around the laws.

The plan still needs approval. The casino has submitted a development application to the city that includes $3.9 million in renovations.
