UK Gambling Commission Receives Responsible Gaming Proposal
The initial report and recommendations by the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board have been delivered to the UK's Gambling Commission, which will review the suggestions and then return them to the board. The proposals include discussions of funding research, education, and treatment for problem gambling.
The board drew its conclusions after interviewing a variety of casino and gambling experts, as well as reviewing studies and research from around the globe. When the commission returns the recommendations, the board will then submit for funding of the final proposal from the Responsible Gambling Fund, which draws revenue from the gambling industry.
"I am pleased to receive this first set of recommendations under the new structure designed to ensure that effective research, education and treatment programs are delivered cost effectively," said the chairman of the commission, Brian Pomeroy. "We expect to respond in detail shortly."
Among suggestions are the integration of problem gambling treatment services with the National Health Service, and training for doctors, therapists and other professionals in recognizing and identifying compulsive gambling issues.
A top priority for the board is the need to establish objective, independent evaluation of present and future facilities and services treating and preventing problem gambling.
The board is expected to release more detailed opinions by this coming summer.
