Washington State Lottery Uses Candy Logos, Drawing Minors

Play Now at Slots Plus Casino! The Washington State Lottery, in its over-zealousness in promoting its product, has once again brought shame upon the state and the governor.

The Lottery's mission, as prescribed by the state legislature, is to maximize revenue in a method  "consonant with the dignity of the state and the general welfare of the people.” To that effect, a board appointed by the governor watches over the Lottery management.

Yet, two years ago, when lawmakers were debating raising the age of legal play from 18 to 21,  Lottery official campaigned against the change, asserting that the 18-to-20 market was essential to gambling revenue, and identified this market as a key area to target, being the future of lottery gambling.

Governor Chris Gregoire put a stop to this position, noting that advertising targeting 18-year-olds also could appeal to those under 18.

Now, the Lottery staff has done it again. In a marketing scheme reminiscent of tobacco's Joe Camel, the Lottery has entered into an agreement with Hershey's, using the logos of popular candies such as Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Jolly Ranchers to sell scratch-off tickets.

State Representative Dan Roach asserted, "The state is grooming kids to be habitual gamblers.'

When the tickets were finally brought to the governor's attention, the games were quickly pulled, leaving thousands unsold.

A Lottery spokesman commented that concern arose that "possibly minors could be attracted to it."

Well, who else? Washington needs to get a grip on the corporate, anything-for-a-buck attitude prevalent at the Lottery, before more embarrassment comes their way.
