Gambling Counseling Goes Online in Australia
The Australian government announced the creation of an online counseling service designed to give help to problem gamblers anywhere in the country. Gambling Help Online will offer round-the-clock assistance to individuals seeking help for gambling disorders and troubled behavior.“For the first time, Australians now have online access to qualified gambling counsellors who can provide assistance through either live online counselling or email,” said Community Services Minister Jenny Macklin.
Macklin said the accessibility of the program, plus its continuous service and anonymous nature, all would serve to help Australians facing technological changes in gambling, including online betting.
The service works either to registered users or anonymously, at the choice of the applicant.
Other government officials noted that working online allows problem gambling counselors to work in an environment that victims would find both confidential and safe.
The program is integrated with telephone and in-person compulsive gaming help services operated by the Break Even Network. The website will contain information and links to further counselling.
