China Requires New Computers to Block Online Gambling

New Chinese personal computers will have to carry special software to bar sites deemed unacceptable by the government, including online gambling pages.

As of July 1st, all personal computers sold in China will be required by the government to contain software blocking access to designated websites, including online gambling sites. The country has instructed manufacturers doing business in the country of the rule, but has not yet informed the public.

Chinese officials say the purpose is to protect children from potentially harmful Internet content. Pornography is listed as the primary target, but online casinos will be included, and speculation as to what political content may be added is rampant.

Software developed by Jinhui Computer System Engineering Company will be placed inside all computers for sale in China. Older models sometimes came with parental controls, but it was not mandated by the government, nor the list of banned sites mandatory.

Bryan Zhang, founder of Jinhui, says the company will " transmit new banned addresses to users' PCs through an Internet update system similar to that used by operating-system software and antivirus programs."

Observers of Chinese politics expect a quick broadening of the list of banned topics if the system proves workable.

Gaming analysts including OCA's own Sherman Bradley have noted the use of a desire "to protect the children"  is as valuable a tool for demagogues in China as the US when trying to rationalize censorship and control the behavior and lifestyle of citizens.
