Online Casino Backs New Rules for Denmark Internet Gambling
After several countries have found crafting online gambling regulations a contentious process as far as respecting EU requirements, Denmark received a significant vote of confidence in its new proposal from online casino operator Ladbrokes. The UK gaming company announced it would seek a license in Denmark if the suggested regulations are adopted.Denmark's existing gaming monopoly had received censure from the EC, which found in 2007 that national policies blocked fair competition by EU online casinos, in violation of the EU's single market philosophy. The EC claims the restrictions in Denmark to limit Internet gambling to the state monopoly, Dansk Spil are unnecessary and discriminatory.
The proposed new regulations will allow online casinos to compete freely with Dansk Spil for poker, sports betting, and casino patrons. Ladbrokes officials saluted the decision, which stands in contrast to other countries told by the EU to change rules, including Sweden.
"While the Swedish Government has chosen to put forth arguments for a gambling market inconsistent with the demands of consumers, Denmark now chooses another way," stated Lasse Dilschmann, head of Ladbrokes Scandinavia.
Denmark now awaits official approval of its proposal by the EC, and is planning on implementation of the new regulations by spring.
