New Machine Helps Prevent Problem Gambling
A device currently being introduced to the market by Canadian gaming company TechLink may help victims of problem gambling to control their urges and keep gambling losses from getting out of hand. The Responsible Gaming Device gives players control of the information and options needed to avoid compulsive gambling. The device is currently designed for use at cooperating land casinos, but may prove invaluable for online casino sites.
Players create a profile on the plug-and-play device, which then tracks wagers and results and gives the operator choices to keep the gaming experience safe. The machine gives a running picture of the player's money management, allowing for what Techlink calls the "player's reality check."
Players can program the machine to limit losses in a given time period or to bar play altogether on a given day or after a certain amount of time. After the limit is reached, the device locks patrons out from all machines available.
Self-exclusion can be chosen, preventing a player from using any gambling machines under the device's jurisdiction. The patron can set exclusion to last from one to three days.
The product is marketed to participating casinos as Gameplan. Once casino machines install the software, the Responsible Gaming Device can be plugged into any machine, which will then exchange information with the host machine, setting the terms of play for that individual player.
A group, labeled the Internet Gaming Study Committee, is presently studying Gameplan for its effectiveness at online casinos, and to recommend standardized usage to the Gaming Standards Association.
