NFL Forces Frank to Keep Online Sports Betting Illegal

Millions of dollars spent on lobbying by sports leagues to prevent sports gambling resulted in Frank accepting the reality that including sports wagering in his package could put the whole bill at risk.

As the particulars of Barney Frank's legislation proposing regulation of online gambling are reviewed, one notable feature is the continuance of the ban on Internet sports betting. Millions of dollars spent on lobbying by sports leagues to prevent sports gambling resulted in Frank accepting the reality that including sports wagering in his package could put the whole bill at risk.

Sports organizations in the US, the National Football League in particular, have argued vehemently against any legal Internet gaming. Officials from the NFL have claimed the purity of their games is at stake.

“The expression by the professional leagues of shock at the notion that people would actually bet on games was one of the least persuasive emotional outbursts I have encountered, but we acknowledged the reality of it,” said Frank. Despite NFL hypocrisy, Frank realized the resistance to sports betting is extremely powerful, if misplaced.

Frank and his co-authors were forced to place a clause in the regulatory bill reading, ‘‘No provision of this subchapter shall be construed as authorizing any licensee to operate an Internet gambling facility that knowingly accepts bets or wagers on sporting events from persons located in the United States."

“No one will be betting on professional sports games,” said Frank sarcastically. While no one may play at legal, licensed, regulated online casinos, millions of residents will bet billions of dollars with neighborhood bookies and illegal operations, as they do every year.

When it comes to sports betting this country needs to get its head out of its you know what.Illegal bookies make a fortune taking sports wagers, primarily on the NFL.People are always going to gamble.Without it the NFL would be no where near as popular as it is today.Vegas doesnt want internet sports betting legalized as that is their baby. They have politicians wrapped around their finger because of money.Being allowed to gamble from the comfort of ones own home would not influence outcomes of games anymore than it does today.I like the NFL commissioner but wish he would follow examples of Europe and most other major continents where sports betting is legal and has been for decades.

Does the NFL know that ESPN shows point spreads in its ticker at certain times when previewing football games?

The "purity" of the game - what a joke. Half the people in the USA wouldn't be watching football if it weren't for gambling.

Making it legal will NOT hurt the NFL, only hurt the illegal operations and bookies. We'll just bring the bettors out of the shadows. Plus, we'll fill the coffers because we realize we'll have to pay taxes. So be it!

Even if sports betting were included in Frank's Bill, it would not stem the flow of money or bets to bookies simply because the winnings/losses will not be taxed. Neigborhood bookies will always prosper if taxes are to be taken by the government.

A Washington lobby is supposed to represent the people who can't live in Washington and lobby for themselves. Who are the NFL lobbyists lobbying for? The people want to gamble. I don't know one person who says it should be illegal. So the NFL needs to stop lobbying for itself and start lobbying for the people who want to bet on football games.

The popularity of the game would explode, and regulated bookies would help detect and stop possible scandals. What is the bad things that will come from sports gambling?
