Online Casino Uses NCAA Quarterback Photo Against Rules
BetUS, an online sports gambling site, has put a photograph of Virginia Tech quarterback Sean Glennon on the cover of its monthly promotional mailing. The picture has caused a stir at the school and NCAA headquarters, as both gambling and student profits are areas heavily frowned upon by the college association.
School officials said the photo was used without permission, and that they have asked BetUS to not continue mailing any more copies and to refrain from using Glennon's pictures in any way in the future.
Tim Parker, NCAA compliance officer for Virginia Tech, said the issue was not uncommon. In fact, he said the school has a form letter used when players are featured without prior consent. He said the school was required to tell BetUS to cease and desist, or else Glennon's eligibility could be endangered.
NCAA rules forbid student-athletes from collecting reward for their achievements, preferring that all dollars be handed to the institutions and their corporate athletic departments. Further, any association with gambling is a violation, as the NCAA currently makes no money directly from gambling.
Parker noted that NCAA rules bar Glennon, or any athlete, from making a profit through using their likeness. The NCAA clearly accepts the responsibility of protecting student-athletes from the perils of doing business with online casinos, or any form of gambling, all while making sure the slave labor pool stays fully stocked. Given the question as to who is more upfront, transparent, and honest, Internet gambling sites finish far ahead of the NCAA. It's enough to make Sean Glennon vomit.
