Philippines Introduce New Rich Lottery Game
The Philippines have begun play on a new online lottery game designed to be the biggest paying offered in the nation. Power Lotto was launched today by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.
Power Lotto offers a jackpot of over $1.1 million.
The game is based on a combination of existing lotteries. Five numbers , each from 1 to 55, are selected by the player; then one power number is picked from 1 to 10.
To win the grand prize, a patron must have chosen all five numbers correctly, as well as the power number.
Smaller payouts are available to reward those with some correct numbers, but not all. Five numbers without the power ball would pay $15,766. For number with the correct power number would receive $1,125. Smaller groupings would get smaller payouts.
If the jackpot numbers are not matched, the prize rolls over into the next jackpot.
An entry cost $1.12.
Unlike many countries, where lotteries are viewed as a regressive tax on the poor, the Philippines consider playing the lottery a form of charitable donation. All monies received by the system go to organizations helping the country's destitute.
The nation's middle class is encouraged to play the lottery as a way to entertain oneself while contributing to those less fortunate.
It is estimated that Power Lotto will earn almost $ million for good causes in its first six months of existence.
A spokesman for the Sweepstakes Office said it is expected that many well-off Philippinos will "catch the charity virus" and play the new game generously.
