Internet Casinos Among Banned Gambling in Poland
Following a wave of political corruption linked to payments by gaming operators, the Polish legislature has decided to bar gambling in most available venues, allowing only land casinos to host gaming. Slot machines readily available throughout the nation will be pulled, and other alternatives like online casinos forbidden.Donald Tusk, Poland's Prime Minister, hailed the new law, which has widely been panned as an attempt by ruling lawmakers to deflect deeper investigation into the widespread graft and corruption amid the national government. Tusk had to release several close appointees last month after they were implicated in selling political favors to gambling interests.
Yet, many observers of Poland's political landscape say the sale of influence extends far beyond gambling, and that Tusk is trying to keep his chances at reaching the Presidency alive by conducting a dog-and-pony show castigating the gaming industry.
If signed by President Lech Kacynski, the law will bar all gambling not held at licensed land casinos, which will face a hefty tax raise. A new age minimum of 18 will be set for gambling.
The vote on the casino issue passed the Polish Senate by a vote of 48 to 3, but included 30 abstentions. The law may run into immediate conflict with EU regulators for impeding trade in online casino services.
