Soccer Associations Want Share of Online Casino Sportsbooks
The European Parliament is preparing a report on the state of online gambling and how it affects member-states and their commerce across each others' borders. One group closely watching the process is the Union of European Football Associations.
The soccer organization wants lawmakers to address the avoidance of corruption and scandal by making moves to protect the sport's integrity. But the group also asked to receive "...a fair financial return from sports betting."
That is, because online casinos and sportsbooks use their onfield products to base their wagering on, the UEFA wants to enjoy some of the gambling spoils. The soccer association joined the Sports Rights Owners Coalition, representing teams and owners from rugby, cricket, basketball, tennis, and horse racing, in calling for a "competition organizer's right."
The sports groups are pushing for France, as it phases in legalized online gambling, to set a precedent in which the providers of the event receive some of the profit from the betting.
Monitoring of suspicious gambling patterns, and strong watchdog functions guarding against inappropriate gambling influences were also high on the agenda of the UEFA and their colleagues. A close relationship with online casinos must be the desired goal, as almost a partnership seems to be the ultimate plan for sports owners.
